You’ve landed, cleared passport control and collected your bags. Now comes the question that catches out even seasoned travelers: how do you actually get to your hotel?
Step outside and you’ll usually find four choices: a private transfer, the taxi rank, a train into the city, or a rideshare app. Each one can be the right answer. The trick is knowing which one suits this trip before you land, rather than deciding in a busy arrivals hall.
The four options at a glance
Private transfer: comfort, convenience and peace of mind
A driver meets you in arrivals, helps with your bags and takes you straight to the door.
- Best for: late-night arrivals, families, lots of luggage, business travelers who need to work or rest on the way, and first visits to an unfamiliar city.
- Keep in mind: it’s usually the most expensive option, and it needs to be booked ahead. Get the driver’s name, a contact number and the exact meeting point in writing.
Taxi: widely available and fast
Most airports have an official taxi rank right outside arrivals.
- Best for: short to medium trips, when you haven’t booked anything and want to leave quickly.
- Keep in mind: use the official rank only, never someone approaching you inside the terminal. Ask whether the fare is metered or fixed, and whether cards are accepted, before you set off.
Train: cost-effective with local access
Many major airports have a direct rail or metro link into the city.
- Best for: light packers, daytime arrivals, budget-conscious trips, and cities where traffic is heavy.
- Keep in mind: check the last train time if you land late, and know which station is closest to your hotel. You may still need a short taxi or walk at the other end.
Rideshare: flexible and often budget-friendly
Rideshare apps can be a good middle ground between a taxi and a private transfer.
- Best for: travelers who already use the app at home and are visiting a city where it operates.
- Keep in mind: not every app works in every country, and some airports have a specific pickup zone. Prices can rise at busy times. Always check the car and the driver’s name match the app before you get in.
How to choose: four quick questions
- What time do you land? Late at night, a pre-booked private transfer or the official taxi rank is usually the calmest choice.
- How much are you carrying? Several large bags make trains and crowded pickup zones hard work.
- Who are you traveling with? Children, older relatives or a group often make door-to-door the better value.
- How far is your destination? For long trips, a train can be faster and much cheaper than sitting in traffic.
Your airport transportation checklist
Use this before you fly:
- Compare your options for that specific airport and city.
- Check pricing and payment: fixed or metered, card or cash, and roughly what the trip should cost.
- Confirm your pickup details: meeting point, driver name, contact number, or the rideshare pickup zone.
- Choose a licensed and trusted provider: official ranks, reputable companies, recognised apps.
- Know your final destination route: save your hotel address offline and roughly how long the journey should take.
Why it matters
The first ride of a trip sets the tone for everything after it. When you know your options, you avoid inflated fares, long waits and the stress of making a decision while tired and jet-lagged. For business travelers, it’s also part of staying safe and reachable. Transportation transparency isn’t a luxury extra. It’s the standard every traveler deserves.
